New Immunization Requirements for PA Schools This Fall

With the new school year upon us, I want to let you know the state Department of Health and the State Board of Education recently updated state regulations related to school immunization. This is an effort to achieve “herd immunity” from certain infectious diseases and reduce the risk of preventable outbreaks in schools.

The new rules require parents to get their children fully immunized prior to the fifth day of school or the students will be excluded from school. Previously, parents had eight months to meet school immunization requirements. If a student is in the middle of an immunization series and it is too soon for the next dose, the parents must provide the school nurse with a written plan, signed by their health care provider, within the first five days of school.

These changes are place for the 2017-18 school year.

For more information, contact your health care provider, call 1-877-PA-HEALTH, or click here.

Loux Covered Bridge Closed

Due to structural damage sustained by an oversized vehicle, the Loux Covered Bridge over Cabin Run on Carver-Wismer Road in Bedmister Township has been closed until further notice.

PennDOT engineers will evaluate the condition of the bridge and establish a repair plan.

In the meantime, motorists will be detoured over Stump Road, Route 413 (Durham Road) and Dark Hollow Road.

White House Accepting Interns

The White House Internship Program (WHIP) website is now up and running and applications are being accepted. Those who want to apply to be part of the WHIP Spring 2018 Class, which runs from Jan. 10–April 27, 2018, can find more information and complete the application by clicking here.

The application deadline is Friday, Sept. 8. Interns must be at least 18 years old as of the internship start date, and must meet at least one of the following criteria:
  • Are currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program at a college, community college or university (two-to-four year institution).
  • Have graduated from an undergraduate or graduate degree program at a college, community college or university (two-to-four year institution) no more than two years before the internship start date.
  • Are a veteran of the United States Armed Forces who possesses a high school diploma or its equivalent and has served on active duty - for any length of time - in the two years preceding the internship start date.

White House Internships are unpaid, and interns are responsible for finding and paying for their own housing.

Since this is a federal level internship, neither I, nor my office will have any input on the selection process.

Attention Medicare Recipients

From now through the end of the year, Medicare will mail out new Medicare cards that no longer feature Social Security numbers. The new card identification number will be a random mix of numbers and letters as a way to protect a cardholder’s identity.

A cardholder’s benefits will remain the same, the cardholder does not have to take any actions and the new cards are free.
For more information, call the PA-Senior Medicare Patrol at 1-800-356-3606. Help is free and confidential.

Senior Septa Passes

My office is able to help senior citizens of the 143rd District apply for the new senior Septa pass. The new picture ID card works with the new fare system that Septa is working on implementing across their system.

Seniors will need to have with them a driver’s license or photo ID and their old Septa passes if they have them when they come into the office to fill out the form and get their picture taken.

Please call out office at (215) 489-2126 to for more information.
