August 27 Update: Private Well Contamination in Plumstead Township
On 8/26/2010, DEP met with Senator McIlhinney, Representative Quinn, Township Chairman Frank Froio and Carolyn McCreary, Plumstead Township Manager to discuss short and long term plans to replace the impacted wells with a potable water source. The short term option is to maintain the tank truck on site with whole house service to 11 homes.
Long term options included use of the well currently serving the Township building to supply water to the 5 homes, where sample results indicated levels contamination, or replacing the wells at the homes with an impaired water source.
Township requirements made that option questionable so we have advised the HSCA contractor to begin drilling a replacement well at the home with the highest concentrations of fire related contamination. If we are able to develop a replacement well here, we will look at sampling data to determine which other wells would need a replacement well installed.
We also discussed HSCA remediation plans for the site. The ponds are being emptied and the need for further remediation will be based on the latest testing results."
